Making a Call to 911
  • Try to remain as calm as possible. Take a deep breath and speak clearly.
  • Tell the 911 operator the nature of the emergency. EXAMPLE: I need the .... (Fire Department, ambulance or Police).
  • If the house is on fire, LEAVE the house and call from a neighbor's home or a cell phone.
  • Know where you are. If help is needed at another location, tell the 911 operator.
  • Answer the questions the operator asks. They can help to determine the help you need.
  • Keep the answers short and to the point.
  • Follow all the instructions given to you by the 911 operator.
  • Stay on the line until the 911 operator tells you to hang-up.
  • Turn on your outside lights and if possible send someone out to direct the emergency personnel.
