Calling for Law Enforcement
  • Remain calm. Dial 911; do not use a seven digit number in a true emergency.
  • If the crime is in progress, attempt to get to a safe place.
  • When the 911 operator answers, immediately advise the operator that you have an emergency and give a very brief description of the crime ("Breaking and Entering in progress", "There has been a car accident", etc.)
  • Advise the 911 operator of your location.
  • Be prepared to answer questions on the description of the criminal or if there are any personal injuries.
  • Stay on the line until you are told to hang up.

REMEMBER: If no contact is made on a 911 hang-up or no contact call, law enforcement will be dispatched from information provided by the Automatic Location Identifier(ALI). The ALI information is a record from the phone company that contains the listing name, address, telephone number, area and other important information.? This system has proven to be accurate a majority of the time; however, nothing is perfect. Do not take for granted 911 already knows where you are.? Make sure you inform the 911 operator of your location.
